Reflections: NCMPR Annual Conference

Texas hospitality combined with the usual community college uber-friendliness made the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR) annual conference in San Antonio, Texas a true feel good networking event. I had the pleasure of meeting many new colleagues under the awesome Live Oaks at the Hill Country Hyatt.

Most of my conversations were about how crucial recruiting is on community college campuses these days.

I met several recently hired Marketing Directors who are new to high ed. It is good to know that administrations are investing in the talent it will take to grow and thrive.

Visual storytelling by way of video is a successful and necessary tactic to recruit, engage, and retain community college students today. The most moving keynote was, “No Greater Odds: The Power of Narrative in Telling the Community College Story.” This Emmy-nominated documentary was produced and presented by the dynamite team of James McCoy and Charlene Gibson from the College of Southern Nevada.

Community college marketing continues to improve and evolve. Similar yet different than traditional college marketing, it’s not always easy. NCMPR is a positive, extremely organized force that recognizes achievement by students as well as the on-campus staffers making an impact on enrollment and retention.
