Illustrated Campus Maps Offer Pathways to Student Engagement

When our higher ed clients’ campuses grow and evolve, PS&L is especially proud to offer creative support through complex illustrated maps for use in print and online.

Just recently the College of the Holy Cross, located in Worcester, Massachusetts, reached back out to us to update a campus map illustration created years before. This isn’t unusual for the agency. Our clients know that photography alone cannot connect prospective and current students to the institutional brand stories embedded in a school’s facilities.

According to Bob Oxman, PS&L Vice President of Creative Services, who led a reimagining of a campus map for Marywood University’s viewbook that unpacked key factoids related to each building (pictured above), it’s not just where the library or gym can be found on campus, but what kinds of meaningful experiences evolve from those spaces. For instance, just showing where a cafeteria is located doesn’t account for how that is also where a prospective student might begin to feed lifelong relationships with friends and faculty.

“It’s not just where you can find a building or what it looks like that’s integral to an effective campus map, but how each structure represents what a student can do inside and how that activity might impact his or her learning and overall life on campus,” he says. “A prospect’s understanding of your physical space needs to be on brand with how you are marketing your institution, and an illustration offers more opportunity to establish these pathways.”

In 2010, PS&L Graphic Designer and Illustrator Nick DeNucci created the above campus map for the College of the Holy Cross. We are proud to be partnering again with Holy Cross to keep its campus map true to the current campus experience.

PS&L designed this illustrated map on behalf of the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in Connecticut for use in its campus visit program.
