How Non-Profit Colleges and Universities Recruit Active Duty and Veteran Military Students
Jim Paskill of Paskill Stapleton & Lord provides higher education marketing strategy for military student recruitment in ‘Academic Impressions'
January 2010
Glenside, PA – January 12, 2010 - With for-profit colleges investing significant funds to attract the post 9/11 GI Bill student, many non-profit colleges and universities are budgeting more in their higher education marketing plans for military student recruitment. In the June 7 posting on Academic Impressions, Jim Paskill from Paskill Stapleton & Lord, university consultants, warns about setting realistic expectations.
Paskill states that military students are pragmatic shoppers when it comes to selecting a university. “They want to know which institution can get them what they need most quickly and most affordably.” Paskill cautions non-profits against competing with the for-profits on a dollar-for-dollar basis and advises them that most active duty military and many veterans are looking for online offerings.
Paskill states that institutions that are serious about recruiting military students need to provide them with services and programs that cater to their specific needs. “If you are going to talk the talk, make sure you are walking the walk. You do not want to send the message that military students are an afterthought.”
Paskill brings a unique perspective to marketing to military students since he has provided university marketing strategy for the Coast Guard Academy and West Point. “While marketing to students who are interested in the military is not the same as marketing to veterans, I am aware of what kinds of information interests those who have served in the military,” says Paskill. “One thing that is crucial in appealing to active duty military and veterans is having a military veteran as a member of the admissions staff.”
Academic Impressions offers online and off-line conferences for the higher education market. The full article is posted on Academic Impressions website.
